Photo Library Mac Repair
Occasionally the thumbnails in the Browser may not correspond to the enlarged image, or the thumbnails may appear to be corrupted, but the enlarged image is fine. While iPhoto and Aperture have a tool to recreate the thumbnails, such a tool is missing in all versions of Photos from Photos 1.0 to Photos 4.0.
Mar 18, 2020 Alternatively, you can open Photos in another user account on your Mac and note whether Photos opens successfully. If Photos opens with the new library, or in a different user account, it might mean that there's an issue with your library. Follow the steps to use the Photos library repair tool on your main Photos library.
May 30, 2017 The '.migrated' library is exactly your old iPhoto Library or the Aperture Library. Only the filename extension has been changed. I would copy this library to an external drive to keep a backup of the original files and the items, that could not be migrated to photos, like your projects or album descriptions or smart albums, and then delete it from the system drive. Solved: Mac Photos app 'cannot open migrated library' or 'library cannot be opened' or 'quit unexpectedly' errors fixed. A friend and colleague who uses a Mac just had problems with his Mac Photos app library. First, it's frustrating in this day and age that software still can't be more resilient against such corruption. But I digress. Jan 17, 2020 If you migrated your library to Photos after installing macOS Catalina 10.15 but before updating to macOS Catalina 10.15.1, complete these steps before continuing: Select your Aperture library in the Finder. By default, it's named Aperture Library and is in the Pictures folder of your home folder. Choose File Get Info. Note: If Use as System Photo Library is grayed out, then the library is already set as System Photos Library. If you want to migrate the assets synced to your iCloud Library, click the iCloud tab and select iCloud Photo. Ensure that Download Originals to this Mac is selected, as the Photos. Follow these steps to recover your original photos — and to have a good shot at fixing. All your photos on all your devices. ICloud Photos gives you access to your entire Mac photo and video library from all your devices. If you shoot a snapshot, slo-mo, or selfie on your iPhone, it’s automatically added to iCloud Photos — so it appears on your Mac, iOS. But it’s also a ground-up rewrite of our Mac photo experience, and some pieces are missing (some permanently), some moved, and some broken. You’ll be prompted to repair the library. If you back up your Mac with Time Machine, you can easily restore a photo library to its state when the last backup was performed. Note: If you use iCloud Photos and you restore the System Photo Library from a Time Machine backup, any photos you’ve deleted since the last Time Machine backup are restored to your Mac and uploaded to iCloud again. Jan 12, 2020 You can access the hidden Library folder without using Terminal, which has the side effect of revealing every hidden file on your Mac. This method will only make the Library folder visible, and only for as long as you keep the Finder window for the Library folder open.
We can use this simple workaround to fix the thumbnails: To rebuild the thumbnails edit them slightly, so Photos will be forced to render new thumbnails. This is best done by rotating the photos back and forth, because rotating by 90° degrees is non-destructive and can be applied to multiple photos at once without having to open the Edit window for each photo individually.
- Select all photos that need new thumbnails at once - it does not matter if the selection includes photos that do not need repairing.
- Then rotate the selected photos back and forth by first pressing ⌘R (Image > Rotate Counterclockwise) and then back by ⇧⌘R (Image > Rotate Clockwise).
This may not suffice, if your photos are RAW photos and the corrupted thumbnails are caused by a difference in RAW processing. In that case try to reprocess the RAW files:
- Double-click a photo in your Photos library to open it, click Edit in the toolbar, then choose Image > Reprocess RAW.
Before applying this fix I'd repair the Photos library, just in case there are other hidden corruptions. Only, if your library is an iCloud Photo Library wait with repairing as the last resort. Repairing will result in uploading the complete library again and comparing the photos to iCloud. You may not want to have that happen on a slow Wi-Fi.
To repair the Photos Library:
- Make a backup copy of the iPhoto Library.
- Hold down the key combination alt/options key and command key ⌥⌘ while double clicking the Photos icon.
- Click the 'Repair' button and repair the library.
This may take a while for a large library.

Photos User Guide
If you back up your Mac with Time Machine, you can easily restore a photo library to its state when the last backup was performed.
Note: If you use iCloud Photos and you restore the System Photo Library from a Time Machine backup, any photos you’ve deleted since the last Time Machine backup are restored to your Mac and uploaded to iCloud again. If you chose to optimize Mac storage, Time Machine may not have a backup of your originals. However, the originals are stored in iCloud.
If the Photos app on your Mac is open, choose Photos > Quit Photos.
Click the Time Machine icon in the menu bar and choose Enter Time Machine, or choose the Apple menu > System Preferences, then click Time Machine.

Click the date of your last backup, navigate to the backup of your photo library, then click to select it.
Click Restore.
Depending on the size of your library, it may take some time for your library to be restored. When you next open Photos, you should be able to use your Photos library as it was when last backed up.
