If you're running low on disk space on your Mac, especially SSD space, every extra bit can count. One of the places you can often scrape out a few extra megabytes or even gigabytes is Mail Downloads. Any attachments you open in Mail or Quick Look gets saved right to that folder. Chances are you don't need them, especially the old ones, and trashing them will free up some valuable space.

That would explain why you can’t select the Remove Attachments menu item, as it doesn’t see an attachment. It is hard to say why this is the case without a firsthand look. So much about email is dependent on your server, not on the client software (Mac Mail, in this case).

How to find and delete old Mail Download files to free up space

  1. Open Spotlight Search
  2. Type in Mail Downloads and click on the folder when it shows up to open it.
  3. Here you'll see a list of files that Mac Mail has saved. These are all attachments that you've either opened in Mail or viewed in Quick look.
  4. Delete the files you don't need and then close the Mail Downloads folder.

If you send and receive a lot of email, it's very easy for the Mail Downloads folder to get extremely large. Checking it every few weeks or months, whatever is appropriate for your use case is a good idea. Mac default browser change.

When an attachment is opened, the file is stored in a temporary folder under the email account’s inbox, in a convoluted naming scheme that references the attachment to the email. Although these files are supposed to be temporary, they stay behind on the drive and can occupy gigabytes of space. Given the complex folder structure used by the Mail app, there’s no easy way to navigate through all these folders and delete the attachments that are left behind.

Any ideas of how they can be deleted? Do any apps exist that can do this automatically for the user?

I suppose that as long as one uses an IMAP acct, the email accounts could be removed from the system and their respective mBoxes deleted in their entirety, before adding the accounts again on the computer. But I’m not clear what else could be lost following this drastic method, which would also be time consuming in case multiple email accounts are used on the same computer.
